Shrink yourself down to see what's going on in the soil...

Shrink yourself down to see what's going on in the soil...

After looking at samples from the greenhouse’s compost bin, we wanted to know what else might be living in soil that is too small for our eyes to see…

Macquarie Island, Australia - Penguins

Location of Macquarie Island

This is Macquarie Island. It’s part of the country of Australia. This penguin colony lives there. There are also other kinds of seabirds, cats, and rabbits on the island. About 9 years ago, Australia decided to get rid of all the cats so that they wouldn’t hunt the seabirds.

If you’ve ever played that Rabbits-Foxes-Grass game, you might be able to predict what happened next. What happened in our game when we didn’t have many foxes?

This is a game about food chains. There are boxes for the different creatures – plants and animals in the world. You have to put the animals in order to make the top predator in the last box. You put it in the box and if it goes right back to where it came from, then it’s wrong.

Cluster B recently began its study of ecosystems. Within each class, a small team of students will be responsible for documenting and presenting information about an ecosystem – the four we’ll focus on the most are forests, oceans, deserts, and the Antarctic.

Our first task was to figure out why these ecosystems have different climates. To do this, we needed to learn about the Earth and how it rotates around the Sun. Here are some of the games we played together.

Explore a model of Earth’s yearly revolution around the Sun:

Here’s another site showing the same idea – this one automatically stops at the dates when the seasons officially “change”.

We also helped everyone’s favorite annoying traveler, Max, visit specific places on Earth during specific seasons:

Finally, this site shows the Earth as it looks right now. You can see where it is day or night, look at a globe or a flat map, and even choose which satellite you’d like to look from.
